Cape Town has a reputation as one of the most beautiful cities in the world, but there’s no getting away from the looming shadow of its high crime rate.
With that in mind, we’ve earmarked some of the safest and most attractive suburbs for investing in property, so visitors and investors can feel a little more assured about a trip to the Mother City.
Note: If you’re looking to invest in property, our Bond Calculator can determine what home loan you will qualify for and what you’re likely to pay in monthly instalments.
1. V&A Waterfront
Cape Town’s premier tourist spot is a piece of paradise by the docks. With officers regularly patrolling the area and significant amounts invested in security, it should come as no surprise that the City of Cape Town invests a lot of resources in protecting its prime hotspot.
2. Camps Bay
The beachside suburb is an affluent region with high-value properties and vibrant restaurants. As one of Cape Town’s prime tourist locations, police presence is relatively high and City of Cape Town ensures lifeguards are present on the suburb’s famous beach. It’s an expensive place to stay, and for good reason.
3. Bakoven
A secluded, intimate suburb just a short drive from Camps Bay. Perfect for those seeking privacy while still offering close proximity to bustling Camps Bay.
4. Kalk Bay
Another peaceful region where visitors have little to fear from laid-back locals. Kalk Bay is a popular getaway offering seaside views, a tidal pool, a famous bakery (Olympia Cafe and Deli) and an old-school fish n’ chips shop (Kalkys). Properties are sure to be affordable in an area relatively far removed from the city centre.
5. Sea Point
An affluent suburb that’s especially popular with retirees. The busy Sea Point Main Road can be a little intimidating at first, but just a short walk away is the peaceful promenade where people can be found walking their dogs and enjoying the ocean views.
6. City Bowl
It hasn’t got the best reputation, but the City Bowl benefits from being heavy police patrol which makes it a safe and vibrant area during the day. Long Street at night, for all its vibrancy, requires some caution and visitors should display the common sense you normally would when visiting a busy city area at night.
7 Mowbray
The southern suburb is replete with green areas and peaceful getaways and offers close proximity to the University of Cape Town and Groote Schuur Hospital. Its crime rate is comparable to that of Camps Bay, making it an ideal family location.
