Kwazulu-Natal is known as South Africa's garden province. Located in the south-east of the country, it borders three other provinces and the countries of Mozambique, Swaziland, and Lesotho.

The province has three different geographic areas: the lowland region along the Indian Ocean coast; the central region, known as the Natal Midlands, comprising an undulating hilly plateau; and two mountainous areas - the Drakensberg in the west and the Lebombo in the north. The province's major city is Durban - a rapidly growing urban area and one of the busiest ports in Africa, with a good rail network linking into Southern Africa. Sugar refining is the main industry but there are also textile, clothing, rubber, fertilizer, paper, vehicle assembly and food-processing plants, tanneries, and oil refineries. The coastline is dotted with small towns, many of which serve as seasonal recreational hubs.

North of Durban is locally referred to as "The North Coast" and includes Ballito, Umhlanga and Salt Rock. South of Durban is referred to as is "The South Coast" and includes Margate, Port Shepstone, Scottburgh and Port Edward. Superb beaches of world-class quality are found along virtually every part of the eastern seaboard, with some of the least developed gems found in the far southern and far northern ends of the province.
